I love it when they get together like that. Xavier is credited as being the first artist who took dance movement into museums, into galleries. JOHN KALDOR, KALDOR PUBLIC ART PROJECTS: What I admire about Zavier is that he is breaking down the barriers between dance, movement, performance and visual arts. If you say it is a performance, there is an expectation of when does it start, "Ah, I'm too late," and such things. I call it exhibition in order to point out a form where the public is invited to come whenever they want and leave whenever they want, so the work addresses something that is not asking for a beginning and an end. Here what we do is try to make a situation where you have to step in the landscape, so there is this notion of something unfolding in front of you where the form is transforming, like a landscape would do, like not with a narrative that with an aim to go somewhere, but it just unfolds. XAVIER LE ROY, CHOREOGRAPHER/ARTIST: The purpose of the piece is to produce a situation where we do actions that unfold and transform, one into the other, and they are conceived like landscape. David O'Shea went along to the undressed rehearsal, and a warning, as you might expect, this story does contain quite a bit of nudity. The Australian art philanthropist John Kaldor and the Carriageworks art space in Sydney have commissioned the exhibition. ![]() It involves 18 nude performers interacting with a fully clothed public. It is the latest work of a former French molecular biologist-turned-choreographer and artist Xavier Le Roy. Now a new exhibition is taking the naked form to a whole new level. ![]() EMMA ALBERICI, PRESENTER: The nude has been a staple of art for centuries. Occasional tests of boldness don’t pay out the silliness of “Chicken Teriyaki,” for example, seems like it should live strictly on TikTok. The intensity builds to a climax as Rosalía chirps “so, so, so, so, so, so good,” while machine guns fire off in the distance, evoking the production style of Rosalía’s close friend and past collaborator Arca, whose influence is felt throughout. “I wanna ride you like I ride my bike/Make me a tape like Spike/I whipped it until it got stiff/In the second place is fucking you/In the first place is God.” She embraces the simple, straightforward pleasures of sex, toying with expectations and contrasts while subverting the kind of lyrics that men get away with all the time. “Hentai” reaches a different level of intimacy: Rosalía’s voice floats over a dreamy piano melody, singing with the warmth and delicacy of Judy Garland. Rosalía addresses the harsh realities of a mid-pandemic world to her 10-year-old nephew, singing, “I’m somewhere I wouldn’t take you/No one’s at peace here between stars and needles/Marble stars cut into the floors/Folies all over the streets where models stroll.” An audio snippet of an older relative stressing the importance of family to her makes the song even more tender-hearted. “Genis” is a wrecking ball of a song that features some of the most gorgeous writing on the album. (“My swag makes you dizzy/Even your momma sings along,” she trills on “Bizcochito.”) However, Motomami is all about dualities and competing energies, so there’s also a side of the LP that’s weighty with emotion. ![]() ![]() Unlike the ornate storytelling on El Mal Querer, which was inspired by a 13th-century Occitan novel, a lot of her new song lyrics are loud flexes and much more colloquial. One major surge of adrenaline comes on the standout “La Combi Versace” with Tokischa, the Dominican powerhouse who joined Rosalía on the single “Linda” last year. “Bizcochito” is so playful it sounds like an ice cream truck rolling through the neighborhood, while “Cuuute” is built on intensely high, pitched-up vocals and thuds of dark, dubby basslines. Rosalía sings about an old romance on “Candy,” a featherweight ballad that suddenly ripples with a minimal dembow beat. The tracks are refined and meticulously crafted, yet still teeming with a sense of movement and spontaneity. Throughout her entire career, she’s worked not just as a composer, singer, and lyricist, but as a producer as well, and here, she oversees a master group of collaborators that includes Michael Uzowuru, Pharrell, Tainy, Sky Rompiendo, and El Guincho. Rosalía grabs giant, acrylic-tipped fistfuls of every sound at her disposal - reggaeton, bachata, salsa, electro-pop, and hip-hop, strengthening her mainstream foothold in Latin pop in particular. The song captures the guiding ethos of Motomami: Nothing is sacred. ![]() “I’m everything, I transform.” An almost deranged arrangement smashes together a sample of the reggaeton favorite “Saoco,” by Daddy Yankee and Wisin, warped piano chords, a jazz interlude, and blasts of distortion. Rosalía is uncompromising about who she is and what she wants to do: From the first seconds of “Saoko,” the hydraulic-charged opener, Rosalía declares herself full of contradictions and metamorphoses and impulses: “I’m very much me, I transform,” she sing-raps. What she offers is a dizzying, kaleidoscopic self-portrait - brash and bawdy at some turns, crushingly vulnerable at other points, and completely ridiculous when it wants to be. Rosalía’s brazen new album, Motomami, is a reaction to all that fame, attention, and discord, one that refracts the noise that’s surrounded her for the last few years, bends it to her will and launches it back into the ether. ![]() She became a lightning rod, eliciting conflicting, divergent responses, like a Rorschach test. People pointed out that she was appropriating from cultures that weren’t hers fans defended what they saw as her limitless sense of world-building. She was hard to pin down, and the discourse around her became a constant. Rosalía kept morphing in the spotlight, shapeshifting through singles, pulling from genres like reggaeton and hip-hop. Waves of criticism came with equal force: She wasn’t doing authentic flamenco. There was endless praise: She was a creative genius. After Rosalía released her 2018 album El Mal Querer, a baroque masterwork anchored in solemn flamenco traditions and glowing pop sounds, the Spanish artist’s world cracked wide open, and everything seemed to rush at her at once. Every background character, with their exhausted and agitated demeanor, looks like they walked out of a Rick Altergott panel. Never have photographed close-ups (by DPs Sean Price Williams and Hunter Zimny) felt so much like Drew Friedman drawings: pimpled cheeks seem rendered by Friedman’s attentive stippling technique. ![]() ![]() Funny Pages succeeds in vividly translating the sublimely ugly-beautiful characters, crummy locations, and slightly off-register colors of a particular strain of alternative comics into a live-action film. Clowes’s comics have been adapted for the screen multiple times, but never with the aesthetic treatment his drawings deserve. If conceptually out-of-date, Funny Pages is nonetheless visually compelling. Rather than recognize the “soul” in the weird Mannerist figuration of Image Comics (currently celebrated by alternative cartoonists on the Cartoonist Kayfabe YouTube channel), not to mention the obviously extraordinary “craft” of Johnny Ryan’s tight open shapes and rigorous remixing of lowbrow humor, Funny Pages celebrates Kochalka’s contrarian stance without any characterizations that might update its decades-old mold. Others (including Frank surrealist Jim Woodring) pushed back, asserting that craft was a means of unlocking the “soul” of the artist. This conflict recalls the famous (among cartoonists) debate set off by James Kochalka’s letter to the editor in a 1996 issue of The Comics Journal, titled “Craft is the Enemy,” which posited that craft stifled creativity. ![]() This movie is so 1990s that Robert’s troubled mentor, Wallace (Matthew Maher), is an Image Comics artist who touts his “craft” over the “soul” of the teen’s goofy cartoons (drawn by real-life cartoonist Johnny Ryan). Considering the massive sway of comic books in popular culture-among both the young and old-for well over a decade, wouldn’t it have been more relevant and refreshing if the parents were comic fans, or even cosplayers? Then the kid might have rebelled in a different way, maybe by arguing that his parents’ tastes are childish! To begin with, Robert’s parents strongly disapprove of his career choice. The cartoonist played by Anders Danielsen Lie in Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, who is questioned about the sexism of his comics , is more like the present-day cartoonists I know than those depicted in Funny Pages.īesides a few odd outbursts of violence, Funny Pages deploys the same circa-1991 archetypes of Daniel Clowes’s Art School Confidential (adapted for the screen in 2006 by Crumb and Ghost World filmmaker Terry Zwigoff) that appeared alongside other comics about snotty aspiring cartoonists (like Dan Pussey) in Clowes’s long-running series, Eightball. But Kline’s movie feels like it takes place in some alternate reality, dominated by the snarky male back-issue “bin divers” of yesteryear, and devoid of anything and anyone that doesn’t support this retrograde vision. ![]() Today, the majority of aspiring cartoonists at the School of Visual Arts in New York are women there’s been an explosion of Japanese comics and international webcomics seemingly every bookstore now has graphic novels, young-adult comics, art comics, nonfiction comics, experimental comics, and everything in between. The movie is set in the present day, yet the cartooning world it depicts is firmly that of the 1990s.Ī lot has happened in comics in the last three decades. There’s an anachronistic feel to Owen Kline’s Funny Pages, which follows an aspiring 17-year-old cartoonist, Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), as he leaves his suburban comfort to pursue a life of real grit and hone his artistic chops on the outskirts of Trenton, New Jersey. Nick Pawlik is the Sous Chef and the heir apparent to be the Executive Chef in the next Cellar: Greensboro? Charleston? Asheville? Undetermined at this point.Prohibition of alcoholic beverages, that most dire of American eras, fostered the most secluded of drinking spots. Another great side dish is the Cellar’s take on Duckworth’s Fresh Cut Fries: Truffle Hand Cut Fries with a Malt Vinegar Aioli dipping sauce and parmesan cheese. Another favorite is the 32oz Tomahawk Ribeye cooked in a 1800 degree Broiler- WOW!!! The menu also includes Truffle Mac and Cheese, Charcuterie boards, Espresso Rubbed Carpaccio Lamb Tenderloin, Smoked Salmon Flatbread, Broiled Lamb Chops, and Corn Flake crusted French Toast. One of the highlights is the Taco Plate with a Braised Chicken Taco, a Pork Belly Taco, and an Octopus Taco. We hired an amazing Executive Chef, Fred Quinnones to write the menu for the gastropub. I am ecstatic to unveil our menu to Charlotte and the rest of the foodie nation. So the anchor to the gastropub is the food menu. Our service staff will keep with the prohibition-era speakeasy theme we will all be decked out in some 1920’s type clothing, suspenders and all! Feel free to get dressed up if you want to, but please, leave your Tommy Gun at home. When Rob Duckworth asked me who I would want to be my Assistant General Manager, without hesitation I chose Drew as he and I have worked well together for about 4 years and I know that he will bring the same passion to each shift that I do. Our Service Manager is Andrew Hayes, who many of you know from his bartending days at our Huntersville location and several other popular concepts in the Charlotte area. We have invited a couple of the most talented servers from the Duckworth’s location as well hand-picking the rest of the staff from around Charlotte’s best restaurants. We will be offering fine dining food in a comfortable setting where you don’t have to get dressed up, with top-notch service. Photo credit Wendy Raymond at Taps & Snaps ( note from Cat-I recommend the East Village) I will recommend The Asian Pear or the Morning Flip as they have been my two favorites so far. I strongly encourage you to read the descriptions of the cocktails on the iPad and choose for yourself which one sounds like you. ![]() Ron, and now the rest of us at the Cellar, understand some craft cocktails. Tasty, tasty, research! I have enjoyed the cocktails that Ron has created more than any we tried in New York. Rob Duckworth took us up there for research. Six of us went to New York City and tried cocktails all over the city- this was not as terrible as it sounds. Ron has spent many hours mixing cocktails for us to try this is a tough job, but we can suffer through the sampling of these tasty drinks. The man behind the cocktails is Ron Oleksa. This is a trend that has been catching on in Charlotte, Asheville, Atlanta, and larger southern towns over the past couple of years. One of the most exciting ventures in the new concept is the addition of craft cocktails. We will also be offering some really great wines by the glass as well as by the bottle. We are also focusing on a large bottle selection (for consumption onsite or to take home) in the namesake “Cellar” that will be introduced at a later date. In addition to the draft beer there will be canned mostly local craft beers available. Anyone who is familiar with the Duckworth’s brand will know the only thing modest about the beer wall is the number of taps. The Cellar will contain a modest twenty select taps and a beer engine for cask beers. The Cellar at Duckworth’s is opening to the public July 20th as a gastropub with a beer obsession. I am confident The Cellar will change the dynamic of what we think of as a beer-centric restaurant in the Southeast. It has been really cool to see the progression from week to week as we develop this super restaurant. While that is an exaggeration, I am surrounded by some extremely talented people. This is quite possibly the most brain power in one room since Thomas Jefferson dined alone. Every Wednesday a group of eight experts in their individual fields all met to sculpt this concept. I am the General Manager of this new concept and I want to share my experience of the development and progression of this restaurant. I don’t normally talk about my own career in a public forum, but to answer all of the questions that I have had from so many people, I will. The most recent location boasts 151 Craft Beer on tap and 170 flat screen TVs! There is also a 55″ iPad mounted to the wall for your beer menu browsing while you wait for a table. There are now five locations in and around the Charlotte area. If you are familiar with Charlotte and/or craft beer, you are surely aware of Duckworth’s Grill and Tap House. ![]() #BOTTLING# Enabling CoreAudio, Colors, Antialiasing and flat menus. ![]() LD_LIBRARY_PATH.: /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/lib:/opt/X11/lib:/usr/X11/libĭYLD_FALLBACK_LIBRARY_PATH.: /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/lib:/usr/lib:/opt/X11/lib:/usr/X11/libīOTTLE.: /Users/jeremiahbird/Desktop/VLC media player 2.2.appĮXECUTABLE_PATH.: /VideoLAN/VLC/vlc.exeīUNDLE_IDENTIFIER.: īUNDLE_CATEGORYTYPE.: WINEPATH.: /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/bin WINEPREFIX.: /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources HOME.: /Users/jeremiahbirdĬOMPUTERNAME.: Rediniaâs iMacīUNDLERESOURCEPATH.: /var/folders/qx/m4wftbpj7pzb52htky4tgj0m0000gp/T/AppTranslocation/D2A059B1-0D85-4345-B44F-EB11B1337DA7/d/WineBottler.app/Contents/Frameworks/amework/Resources ![]() PATH.: /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin PWD.: '/Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/bin' var/folders/qx/m4wftbpj7pzb52htky4tgj0m0000gp/T/AppTranslocation/D2A059B1-0D85-4345-B44F-EB11B1337DA7/d/WineBottler.app/Contents/Frameworks/amework/Resources/bottler.sh: line 39: /Applications/Wine.app/Contents/Resources/bin/wine: Bad CPU type in executable Please let me know if not, or provide alternative methods of getting the game running on the latest version of Mac.) It only controls two decks of the software, but nonetheless it controls lots of what Serato can do – and the clincher with this particular version of this controller is that it comes with a full Serato DJ Pro licence, meaning you don’t need to spend the $100 extra to get the software, as with the other Serato controllers on this list.
